Cuba - Guantanamo BayTournament: UT - Austin | Round: 1 | Opponent: NA | Judge: NA CHAPTER ONE - THE CURRENT SITUATION Moazzam Begg spent 20 months in solitary confinement in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp after being arrested in Pakistan. He was released without charge in January 2005.Here’s his story, Published by the Telegraph on the 6th of November, 2013. As Begg noted, the main way that detainees got their mind off of the current situation was the ability to write. Here is a poem by Osama Abu Kabir It is true. This is true. These are all miracles. To be with my children, each one part of me; But do you hear me, oh Judge, do you hear me at all? Osama Abu Kabir is a Jordanian water truck driver. After joining an Islamic missionary organization, he traveled to Afghanistan, where he was detained by anti-Taliban forces and handed over to the U.S. military. Kabir remains at Guantánamo. Despite promises by the Obama administration the harsh treatment at Guantanamo Bay continues. PLAN - Therefore Evan and I are resolved that the United States Federal Government should close the naval base in Guantanamo Bay and cede all land owned in Guantanamo back to the Republic of Cuba, and the Supreme Court should order release of all detainees. CHAPTER TWO - A PLAN TO SOLVE The only way to solve this atrocity is through release of detainees. CHAPTER THREE - GOVERNMENTALITY The 164 men in Guantanamo are deemed unworthy of national and international legal protections; the shrouded detainees are direct result of abusive biopower. The prisoners need freedom. We have broken the law, because unjust military courts have dominated the scope The exception of detainees from regular legal norms is a form of biopolitics that justifies exterminating all those who are an exception. It allows for governments to dominate all forms of life OUR ROLE OF THE BALLOT is to resist abusive biopower. Only a constant interrogation into the ways knowledge formation crafts biopolitical government, policies can open avenues for subjects to resist control. Voting affirmative is a unique opportunity to challenge and expose the terror of governmentality | 12/5/13 |
Cuban - AGTournament: UT - Austin | Round: 1 | Opponent: NA | Judge: NA Observation One: INHERENCY PLAN: The United States federal government should lift all restrictions on agricultural sales to Cuba by having the Executive Branch implement preferential trade access to Cuban Agriculture products. The President has the authority to implement preferential trade access for Cuban agricultural products facilitating exports to the US Studies prove Cuba will accept the exports – massively increasing the US market share and agricultural profits. The advantage is ECONOMY The economy is at crossroads for boom or bust, jobs and business investment can provide boom. the country's future…and government sectors Reducing agricultural restrictions adds millions to our economy and supports thousands of new jobs. Agricultural exports to Cuba have an economic multiplier effect, for every dollar of exports it generates $1.96 in economic activity to support the exports. Agricultural exports are key to the overall US economy and employment. Agricultural restrictions are massively limiting US rice exports to Cuba. Rice industry is critical to the US economy Global economic crisis causes war-~--strong statistical support—also causes great power transitions Economic growth is vital to prevent the collapse of U.S. hegemony. US hegemony solves escalation of global hotspots- decline causes hotspots to escalate worldwide | 12/5/13 |
