1AC CubaTournament: LAMDL 1 | Round: 2 | Opponent: DMHS | Judge: Racism Advantage Racism perpetuates violent dehumanization Dehumanization destroys value to life and outweighs all calculable impacts We must reject every instance of racism The embargo on Cuba is a measure that the US imposes on Cuba at the expense of civilians in the name of profit and security interests. Strict secrecy standards enable the US to propagate starvation and poverty The embargo is an unending war against the Cuban people The embargo is genocidal—It targets the most vulnerable elements of Cuban society Poverty is an ongoing form of extinction that practices to erase individuals and cultures through day-to-day forms of structural violence. This outweighs nuclear war – we are the only ones with comparative evidence. Structural violence is the largest proximate cause of war- creates priming that psychologically structures escalation. Focusing on magnitude masks everyday instances of violence—you have a moral obligation to place a disproportionately high value on structural violence. You should privilege everyday violence for two reasons- A) social bias underrepresents its effects B) its effects are exponential, not linear which means even if the only causes a small amount of structural violence, its terminal impacts are huge Solvency The embargo is a form of oppression, the plan addresses our complicity and the complicity of the US government in exporting suffering to the Cuban people Removing the embargo solves – the blockade functions as a shield for political leaders and an alibi for strategic interests to justify any action, even actions at the expense of the people. Even Cuban dissidents have begun to support ending the embargo, the 1AC is a recognition that US policy is perpetuating inequality and poverty amongst the Cuban people. Prioritize the macro ethical stance of the 1AC over the incremental micro focus of the Neg’s counter-plans and disads, the debate should be about crafting ethical responses in the face of suffering not what is politically expedient The Affirmative is a prior question, don’t strictly evaluate body counts—instead the role of your ballot should be a moral stand against economic sanctions that ignore human suffering for the "greater good". The 1AC is a critical challenge to the way imperial thinking pervades US policy. | 11/15/13 |
