GSL Workshop 1ncTournament: GSL Workshop | Round: 1 | Opponent: Ladue CS | Judge: We’ll begin by detailing disadvantages to the plan. First, we’ll outline how by increasing the competiveness of ports, the affirmative plan will cause an increase of coal exports towards China. This has multiple harmful effects
2. U.S. exports lock in expanded Chinese coal capacity---causes climate change over the tipping point---without US exports China would make a shift to renewables. 3. Warming is an existential threat to humanity—we have to take every step to reduce it. Solvency The affirmative team attempts to prove that by implementing offshore wind we can actually assist the US in achieving sustainable energy independence. However, we’ll prove to you that the affirmative plan is not sufficient to resolve the issues they claim. The affirmative has the burden to prove that their specific plan can solve these issues. We’ll be asking several questions about the affirmative plan. If they cannot sufficiently respond to ALL of these questions in a specific manner, you should reject the affirmative plan.
2. Second, what federal agency will provide oversight of the affirmative plan? They just say that the federal government will be performing these actions. However, the federal government is huge with many departments. Make them specify what agency provides oversight of the plan. 3. Third, how long will it take for the offshore wind projects to become viable? If we don’t have a stable timeframe it becomes impossible to justify the costs associated with the plan. 5. Fifth, will private corporations actually build offshore wind farms? If companies don’t build, the plan literally will not happen. It is THEIR duty to explicitly prove, and ours to remain skeptic. AND Multiple reasons why offshore wind fails – technology isn’t adapted, no access, problems increase further offshore Advantage US Economy Strong Now and Will Continue to Grow—Plan isn’t needed Freight rail, roads, and waterways also need to improve in order for the plan to work—the plan doesn’t do this. Ports aren’t key to the economy | 9/5/14 |
