Berk Berk Borders 1ACTournament: Berk Berk | Round: 2 | Opponent: Juan Diego LZ | Judge: Jordon Newton 1ACThe US/Mexico border gets a lot of attention these days. Politicians want to fund it. The Border Patrol wants to protect it. Families want their relatives to cross it. Even South Park did an episode about it. The US/Mexico border has become a phenomenon embedded in the US political lexicon. From Mitt Romney calling for self-deportations to Barack Obama’s allegedly comprehensive immigration reform, political discourse flows through a number of power strategies related to the border. To better understand the way the US/Mexico border is constructed, it is essential for us to analyze the intersection of various mechanisms of power. Sometimes they are complimentary, sometimes they are in conflict, but they are ever-present in the construction of border politics. They are no successes and no failures – only the effects of power. Understanding this site of intersecting power relations is vital to creating a counter-power that challenges dominant border politics.Nail, 13 (Thomas, University of Denver, "The Crossroads of Power: Michel Foucault and the US/Mexico Border Wall," Foucault Studies, February, No. 15, pp. 110=128) First, we must evaluate sovereign power – the notion of a state as the ultimate authority with law as its tool to create obedience. The US/Mexico demarcation serves to establish social identities tied to sovereign, defining where one ends and the other begins.Chacón, 10 (Justin Akers, Professor of US History and Chicano Studies @ San Diego City College, "The U.S.-Mexico border: Free trade without free people," International Socialist Review, Issue ~2373, http://isreview.org/issue/73/us-mexico-border) Next, disciplinary power, which serves to regulate the behavior of individuals in the social body, is well established at the border. Technologies of architecture, surveillance, and policing seek to criminalize behavior and create docile bodies. This renders the migrant body an obedient yet criminal entity constructed through border processes themselves.Nail, 13 (Thomas, University of Denver, "The Crossroads of Power: Michel Foucault and the US/Mexico Border Wall," Foucault Studies, February, No. 15, pp. 110=128) Lastly, biopolitics is made manifest in the border. Power of life is given to the state, where it defines what is included and excluded. The result is a whole population of migrants relegated to a state of exception: a threat to the American population that must be controlled and exterminated.Giorgi 26 Pinkus, 6 (Gabriel, Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese @ NYU and Karen, Professor of French 26 Italian and Comparative Literature @ USC, "Zones of Exception: Biopolitical Territories in the Neoliberal Era," Diacritics, vol. 36, no. 2, "Bios," Immunity, Life: The Thought of Roberto Esposito, Summer, pp. 99-108/JSTOR *we do not support this author’s use of ableist/offensive language) These confluences of power result in thousands of incarcerations and deaths – rendering them to exist only at the margins of social well-being.Chacón, 10 (Justin Akers, Professor of US History and Chicano Studies @ San Diego City College, "The U.S.-Mexico border: Free trade without free people," International Socialist Review, Issue ~2373, http://isreview.org/issue/73/us-mexico-border) That perceptive Hispanophobia renders an entire population as social utility.Walsh, 10 - University College Dublin College of Arts and Celtic Studies, peer reviewed by Prof. Edward James 26 Dr. David Kerr ("The impact of anti-Mexican sentiment on American perceptions of Diego Rivera during the Great Depression", August, 2010, http://www.ucd.ie/ibp/MADissertations2009/Walsh.pdf) The result is the systematic elimination of Mexican and Latino immigrant populations.Al-qaraz Ochoa, 11 (Raul, Tucson border activist and organizer @ UN Pueblo Sin Fronteras, "The New Genocide: Immigration and the U.S. – Mexico Border," 11/2, http://antifronteras.com/2011/11/07/367/) The 1AC should be affirmed as a critical analysis of the power relations intersecting at the border. Only by looking to our method can we shape policies that resist status quo domination.Nail, 13 (Thomas, University of Denver, "The Crossroads of Power: Michel Foucault and the US/Mexico Border Wall," Foucault Studies, February, No. 15, pp. 110=128) The 1AC is in the direction of the topic – we advocate the notion of safe houses as a praxis of shelter along the US/Mexican border and in the debate space. This locus undermines the strategies of power that serve to eliminate the immigrant.Nail, 13 (Thomas, University of Denver, "The Crossroads of Power: Michel Foucault and the US/Mexico Border Wall," Foucault Studies, February, No. 15, pp. 110=128) The role of the ballot is to vote for the team that best interrogates power and exclusion along the U.S./Mexico border.Debate is constructed as a "contact zone", in which diverse arguments are advocated for and against – the establishment of a safe house is necessary for argumentative equality to survive in the contact zone.Canagarajah, 97 - Edwin Erle Sparks Professor, Departments of Applied Linguistics and English, Director, Migration Studies Project, Pennsylvania State University ("Safe Houses in the Contact Zone: Coping Strategies of African-American Students in the Academy", 1997, accessed via JSTOR) | 2/15/14 |
