ConscientizationTournament: Novice Nationals | Round: 2 | Opponent: Des Moines Roosevelt | Judge: Charous, Aaron 1AC(Narrative)Being an Asian American is what my peers consider to be one of the luckiest I remember in middle school when everybody in my grade was so shocked and gossip-y about the fact that there was an Asian in the school who was not getting amazing grades. In fact they were so astonished that they actually took the time to talk about how "fake Asian" I was behind my back. People even came up to me and asked me directly why I wasn’t smart. Being an Asian American living under the model minority myth means that if you do not meet the incredibly high expectations of it you don’t have any other chances you are automatically worthless. Any accomplishments I make aren’t mine. They are the accomplishments of my race as if being Asian was a super power. Anything I do is attributed to my asianness and it means that Megan isn’t smart or talented in any way, but her Asian superpower enables her to be. As far as I’ve been shown, my only accomplishment is being born Asian. ~pause~ That’s the thing about being a minority, I live and experience the world within an entirely different framework than others do – my identity has baggage – baggage that I’m told to leave outside of the door when I walk into the debate room. I’m told to leave my identity at the wayside to affirm a resolution that says nothing about my social location – I’m told to divorce myself from my body and my lived experiences so I can take a "neutral" stance about economic engagement with Latin America. But this topic is not neutral, especially for Koreans that know their history –Sevilla ’7 1/3/7, (Elsa Sevilla is a staffwriter for the KPBS, "Descendants of Korean Immigrants to Mexico Remember the Past", http://www.kpbs.org/news/2007/jan/03/descendants-of-korean-immigrants-to-mexico/) It is part of Mexico’s history which has been kept a secret from the rest This was slave labor – My ancestors were called "Henequen," cactuses with sharp swords – we were hard workers, tough, cold – this is the model minority mythRyu Jin ’5 (’05 9/9/05,Ryu Jin correspondent for the Korean Times, "`Henequen’ Recall 100 Years of Sorrow", http://byeways.net/webreadings/readingcontent/1WORLD_web/2402.htm) MEXICO CITY _ When they left their homeland for a strange country across the Pacific I experience the insidious effects of the model minority myth daily – I am treated as an Asian first and a person second – this is a form of psychological warfare that is part of a larger cultural narrative that is used to uphold the myth of a neutral American meritocracy – minority experiences are marginalized in order to uphold a system of white supremacyThrupkaew ’2 (Prospect Senior Correspondent 2k2 Noy-Thrupkaew; The Myth of the Model Minority; THE AMERICAN PROSPECT; April 7; http://www.prospect.org/cs/articles?article=the_myth_of_the_model_minority) The model-minority myth has persisted in large part because political conservatives are so So here’s the deal – debate is not neutral but instead currently built to exclude dissident forms of knowledge production – treating our community and our debate rounds as if they exist in a societal vacuum upholds a "view from nowhere," which perpetuates whiteness at its core.Yancy ’5 George, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Duquesne University, "Whiteness and the Return of the Black Body," The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, 19(4), p. 215-216 I write out of a personal existential context. This context is a profound source The Role of the Ballot is to performatively and methodologically utilize the debate space to engage in a process of conscientization – we need to be conscious of how history, debate, and knowledge are subjective and already embedded within ideological narratives – our performative pedagogy can not only challenge the model minority myth, but also systems of whiteness that operate within debateTrofanenko ’5 (2005, Brenda Trofanenko is a research chair in education, culture, and community at Acadia University.
