1NC Round 1 - StanfordTournament: Stanford | Round: 1 | Opponent: Peninsula TW | Judge: Tim Mahoney Iran sanctions won't pass now - GOP has just below a veto proof majority but a continued push from the White House is key Reforming US-Cuba agriculture trade laws cause fierce political fights Causes Israel strikes Israeli strikes cause global great power war CP Using its licensing authority and enforcement discretion, the United States Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control should exempt agricultural transactions from enforcement under the Cuban Assets Control Regulations. First, the counterplan solves via specific exemptions — OFAC has broad discretion over sanctions enforcement. Second, the counterplan solves quickly and without political fallout — it doesn’t require legislative or regulatory action. Democratic Backsliding DA Unilaterally cooperating with Cuba destroys the credibility of all Latin American democracy—causes authoritarian backsliding Latin American democracy’s a key model for democracy globally Extinction Sustainable Agriculture While organic agriculture may reduce the usage of pesticides, organic chemicals damage the environment and reduce productivity – this lowers crop yields, undermines food security, hurts biodiversity globally, and comparatively outweighs the aff Food insecurity causes wars Biodiversity checks extinction. Key to ag, medicine, and ecosystems Humans resilient to disease- no extinction No risk of huge pandemic – genetic diversity Despite massive investments in the Cuban agricultural model, the Cuban ag project fails – too many political and practical limitations Political limitations outweigh and undermine effectiveness – recent production gains are woefully insufficient No spillover of sustainable agriculture – tech barrier, intellectual property, and regulations Underfunding of agricultural RandD in developing countries is clearly problematic, and the stage is set for the problem to worsen. AND along with developed countries, are finding it difficult to sustain the current rates of investment in agricultural research. Hyping the impact of water wars makes conflict more likely | 2/9/14 |
1NC Round 4 - Golden DesertTournament: Golden Desert | Round: 4 | Opponent: Rowland Hall RW | Judge: Roman Kezios To specifically resist a certain material circumstance is doomed to fail – by establishing a litmus test of physical, real-world change, the 1AC allows the state or cartels to squash a rebellion against the drug war and declare it a failure. Imperceptible politics coalesces around mundane practice to never allow itself to be declared a failure. The 1AC commodifies the experiences of the citizens oppressed by the drug cartels they claim to speak for. They individualize the government and the cartels but FORGET the agency of those that they use as impacts of “violence” -- this renders their political act meaningless and creates a destructive model of dissent that depends upon authoritarian institutions and imprisons the rhetorical value of the 1AC via commodification that denies the dignity of the represented Adopt the strategy of the Zapatista – become unlocatable resistance, invisible resistance, and declare your allegiance to Hasta la Madre without declaring your tactics – this is the reason that the perm is nonsensical Announcements of challenges to power will be squashed by the state – the affirmative repeats a failed political strategy that MOCKS the material suffering of ACTUAL REVOLUTIONARIES that try to revolt against the totalitarian ontology of the state. Only a SUBVERSIVE academic movement has revolutionary potential, and the affirmative has already tipped their hand – it’s too late. To specifically resist a certain material circumstance is doomed to fail – by establishing a litmus test of physical, real-world change, the 1AC allows the state to squash a rebellion against Cuba’s treatment and declare it a failure. Imperceptible politics coalesces around mundane practice to never allow itself to be declared a failure. The 1AC commodifies the experiences of the citizens oppressed by the ontology they claim to speak for. They individualize the government but FORGET the agency of those that they use as impacts of “violence” -- this renders their political act meaningless and creates a destructive model of dissent that depends upon authoritarian institutions and imprisons the rhetorical value of the 1AC via commodification that denies the dignity of the represented The 1AC has not provided sufficient basis for a productive discussion about the topic – this is why we can’t have nice things. Two contentions: First, discussion is good Key to advocacy skills, flexibility, creativity, and innovation, all of which link turn any solvency mechanism Those skills are critical to creating the change that the affirmative seeks – this is a theoretical argument about the role of the ballot. The 1AC has posited a problem. If they do not claim to do anything about it, vote neg because it was a waste of 8 minutes. If they claim to do something about it, they can ONLY access it through a debate mechanism of education because fiat is illusory. Discussion is the internal link to this which short circuts the aff and is an independent reason to vote neg. Second, the links A. Gotta have a plan – a stable locus of topical engagement is critical to giving us a seat at the table of discussion. Their discussion must assign ACTION to an ACTOR – there is no explanation of what anyone should do. This contributes nothing to academic debate – nothing will happen without action B. Effective engagement with the PRAGMATIC POLICIES of the government is critical to discussion – independent internal link to the mechanism that they need to change means even if they access some education it’s irrelevant without explicit discussion of what the USFG should do; this is both a defense of the government and a reason that it is critical for solving the issue at hand. Case Calls to “step back and think” are philosophically counterproductive – creative and active engagements with the world are far more authentic than their alternative Their insistence that ontology is a prior question creates artificial metaphysical hurdles to effective action-in-the-world—ontological pluralism provides a sufficient justification for the adoption of the plan Technological thought is inevitable—Heidegger's idea of a saving remedy is useless | 2/5/14 |
1NC Round 5 - Golden DesertTournament: Golden Desert | Round: 5 | Opponent: Green Valley SD | Judge: Matt Contreras Plan sparks a firestorm- destroys capital Plan links to politics Causes Israel strikes Israeli strikes cause global great power war K The affirmative’s endorsement of human expansion into space is embedded in historically and culturally contingent notions of progress that are rooted in humanism and the exclusion of non-human subjectivity. This human-centric ethic will culminate in ecological collapse and extinction. The alternative is to vote negative to embrace an ethic of organism. CP TEXT: The United States federal government should establish a sealed-bid, single-price auction system for the distribution of tradable aerospace visa permits to employers wishing to sponsor Employment Based Visas given to Mexican citizens to work in the aerospace industry. Auctions should take place quarterly, with an initial yearly allocation of 280,000 visas. The non-disclosed target price for visa permits should be $2,000. Subsequent allocations of visas should rise proportionally when the average price of permits was above $2,000, and fall proportionally when the average price was below $2,000, in the prior auction. If the allocation of permits disproportionately favors large companies, the United States federal government should set aside an adequate number of permits on which small companies may exclusively bid. Engineering Advantage Alt cause – question of demand not workforce Visas fail – security clearance issues Space exploration causes space diseases and extinction Those diseases mutate – their defense doesn’t apply Space exploration causes asteroid terrorism and extinction Space colonization impossible – the land is uninhabitable Framing Advantage Space colonization doesn’t solve war or the environment – replicates the earths problems Space exploration causes war, viruses, and jacks the environment Space exploration it destroys the ozone later and the environment causing extinction Colonization leads to space wars | 2/5/14 |
