1AC BerkeleyTournament: Berkeley | Round: 1 | Opponent: GBN HK | Judge: Nate Hall Sanctions function like siege warfare -~-- they deprive civilians of basic needs and shift recourses to the elite Scenario 1 is Medicine Cuban isolation makes the most basic disease treatment impossible This is a form of genocide on Cuban citizens Scenario 2 – Freedom of Expression Plan solves internet that allows for Cuban freedom of expression Solves human rights abuse in Cuba Freedom of expression key to individuality and value to life – letting it fall prey to utilitarianism makes its collapse inevitable 1AC Hospitality The status quo is locked into a system of enemy creation and violence. The plan is an act of embracing the demonized other – ethic of absolution is key Hospitality is key to accommodate the other – without out it we are annihilating those who refuse to conform. The embargo leads to identity erasure for the Cuban- American children born in the United State – a mindset shift is key Failure to adopt an ethic of openness causes mass atrocities and violence Plan Text: The United States federal government should remove its economic sanctions on the Republic of Cuba. 1AC Framing We have to change our conception of crisis based politics to include everyday violence Deontology comes first, the means must justify themselves – util justifies any atrocity. Even if we should evaluate consequences, there should be absolute side constraints on deliberately harming innocent people The “1 risk” logic would make all decision-making impossible—evaluate probability over magnitude And –repression is a systemic impact equivalent to nuclear war Sole focus on survival destroys value to life and is always used to justify the worst atrocities. And great power war won’t happen – be skeptical of their authors that exaggerate to create more interesting stories | 2/27/14 |

1AC WakeTournament: Wake Forest | Round: 1 | Opponent: Westminster DH | Judge: Bobby Shaw Sanctions function like siege warfare -~-- they deprive civilians of basic necessities but shifts resources to the elite. This is the biggest impact – the amount of suffering inflicted on the Cuban people by the embargo cannot be quantified. The prime victim of the Specifically embargo on medicine is unethical The embargo makes it impossible for Cuba to access vital medicines Status quo trade results in the death of thousands – we have a moral obligation to lift the embargo Embargo on medicines is unethical The New England Journal of Medicine, Lifting the embargo is essential to restore a free flow of goods and improve the living conditions of Cubans. 1AC Free Speech Now is key for U.S. engagement in Cuba; recent reforms offer opportunity US foreign policy is key to advancement of internet in Cuba Free internet gives Cubans a voice and the ability to protest Even seemingly trivial violations of speech embark down a slippery slope towards genocide and escalating conflict-~-- innocuous suppression of speech leads to more violence And – The Freedom of Speech must be upheld no matter what the cost Suppression of free speech in the name of utilitarian consequences makes the idea of speech perpetually vulnerable to the assertion of some calculation-~--ensures its collapse Plan 1AC War We have to change our conception of crisis based politics to include everyday violence Extremely low probabilities should count as zero—even if there’s some risk, policy decisions can’t be justified by vanishingly small probabilities Sole focus on survival destroys value to life and is always used to justify the worst atrocities. And no war
Daily explosions in Iraq, massacres in Sudan, the Koreas 2. No major power war Why is this so? Most simply, the costs have risen 3. Litany of dispute resolution mechanisms and global barriers to conflict solve 4. Cooperation rises over conflict – no expansionism and no interventionism | 11/7/13 |
