Biofuels AffTournament: NU RR | Round: 4 | Opponent: GBS CM | Judge: Oddo and Hammond Mexican collapse destroys U.S. global engagement Corn Ethanol Adv -~-- 1AC So does famine Plan Text -~-- 1AC Trade Credibility -~-- 1AC This destroys trade relations with China Nuclear war Escalates and causes extinction Energy subsidies co-opt efforts to solve warming and decimate trade credibility Only the plan’s technology solves | 3/22/14 |
Critical Biofuels AffTournament: IHSA | Round: Quarters | Opponent: Niles West CK | Judge: Hamburger, Henderson, Coates-Welsh The first option is to continue using oil by imperialistically exploiting the rest of the world by deploying military forces to control and dominate oil producing countries The second, which is being implemented now, is corn ethanol—this starves the rest of the world, killing over a billion people The corn that Americans burn in their cars could feed the population of 82 food-deficit countries Fortunately, there’s a different way out—non-corn biofuels like sugar, jatropha, algae, and more are all non-food crops that can be produced sustainably—while they’re not perfect, they are the best option—better for the environment, don’t require oil extraction, and don’t spike food prices. The United States federal government should offer Mexico the option to export increased non-corn biofuels to the United States. The plan results in broader non-corn usage—solve prices currently inflated due to corn ethanol usage that drive a third of the world into poverty, malnourishment, and underdevelopment Unfortunately, Mexican biofuels are subject to restrictions upon entering the United States—the plan allows for greater biofuel trade The U.S. already displaced Mexican corn farmers first with NAFTA and then with corn ethanol—only the plan resolves that by bringing profitable agriculture back Corn ethanol is worse than petroleum and massively increases CO2 emissions Moreover, it acts as a carbon sink to decrease current CO2 Extinction Warming is real and anthropogenic Prefer expertism in the context of warming, even if it is bad in general The affirmative’s scientific knowledge is good because it subjects itself to constant refinement based on empirical evidence Allowing warming to continue perpetuates racist inequalities Global warming movements are coming now thanks to a decline in identity politics -~-- only working through the system averts extinction Pragmatic warming policy is effective and key to prevent extinction Public advocacy of climate solutions key to change governmental policy-~--individual change insufficient The state is inevitable and an indispensable part of the solution to warming | 3/23/14 |
Disease AffTournament: IHSA | Round: 3 | Opponent: GBS CM | Judge: Griesbach, Weston Despite efforts to improve relations with Mexico, cooperation will be inhibited by lack of coordination and consultation This is especially true in the context of disease—efforts now are one-sided and ineffective—the plan spills over to higher level cooperation Only moving beyond one-sidedness to bilateral solutions ensures a sustainable partnership The alliance is too focused on security and drugs—the plan is key to a sustainable partnership Scientific collaboration is uniquely beneficial Broader cooperation solves cybersecurity threats Global nuclear war U.S.-Mexican relations spill over—reverse negativity throughout Latin America Global warming is inevitable—Latin American relations solve adaptation That prevents otherwise inevitable extinction 1ac disease Mexico-U.S cooperation on disease is constrained by mismatched systems—mechanisms for data-sharing exist, but are currently underfunded Collaboration is crucial to emergency response on both sides of the border to disease and bioterror attacks Disease outbreak uniquely likely now—includes drug-resistant TB, Valley Fever, and pandemic flu Diseases cause extinction We’ll isolate several specific scenarios— First, antibiotic resistant tuberculosis causes extinction Second, Valley Fever causes extinction Third, current efforts to deal with Chagas disease in Mexico are insufficient Threatens a world-wide pandemic—monitoring the border is key Fourth, Bioterror attack coming on the border Extinction Large casualties ensure nuclear retaliation That breaks down MAD and makes every war go nuclear Fifth, H1N1 originated in Mexico and is coming back—preparation is key to prevent new outbreaks H1N1 outweighs thermonuclear war Sixth, HIV/AIDS is increasing on the border—particularly in the commercial sex industry Ensures mutation and contagion It spreads rapidly and infects the globe Independently, the U.S. is falling behind in biotech now—bypassing US regulations and cost-effectiveness is key Mexico allows U.S. manufacturers to bypass regulations That allows new innovation in agro- and bio-tech Agro-tech solves extinction Industrial biotech is a key source of innovation solves the chemical industry Extinction 1ac plan text | 3/22/14 |

Plan Texts Weve ReadTournament: Plan Text | Round: Quads | Opponent: Plan Text | Judge: Plan Text The United States federal government should offer Mexico to facilitate a substantial increase in United States’ importation of Mexican jatropha biofuels. The United States federal government should offer Mexico to facilitate a substantial increase in United States’ importation of Mexican non-corn biofuels. | 3/22/14 |
SOX AffTournament: TOC | Round: 5 | Opponent: Chattahooche AS | Judge: Kallmyer U.S. capital market competitiveness is collapsing – destroys IPO resiliency This hamstrings U.S. ability to maintain venture capital competitiveness – that has prevented recovery and stifled innovation Banking collapse causes extinction We control three internal links to the economy – first is employment – international firms are leaving the U.S. Second is IPO frequency – they’re critical to capital-driven economic growth Third is venture capital and entrepreneurship – they’re the best statistical metric for measuring growth Key to biotech innovation
Biotech solves extinction Innovation solves a great power war US economic decline causes perceptual weakness that leads to nuclear war Collapse causes global nuclear war Growth solves war – studies prove 1ac mexico advantage Mexico is planning to sell energy bonds – current exchange barriers threaten successful sales – solves budget deficits and growth Bonds are most vulnerable to decline – effective sales are key Economic growth potential doesn’t matter – fears of liquidity collapse outweigh Runaway deficits and a collapse in debt financing destroy the Mexican economy – 2008 proves our brink argument Mexican collapse causes oil shocks Nuclear war Mexican economic decline causes a flood of refugees, resulting in terrorism. US-Mexican border terrorism results in bioterror attacks Extinction 1ac plan text The United States federal government should offer to Mexico to substantially increase economic engagement with Mexico by exempting Mexican firms from relevant sections of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. 1ac solvency Only the plan solves collapsing U.S. market credibility and competitiveness – Mexican companies are in mass exodus due to compliance costs – exemptions in Sarbanes-Oxley regulations are critical to send an international signal Absent access to U.S. resources Mexican debt bond sales will fail – low volume, timing uncertainties, and shallow investor bases | 4/27/14 |
