1AC - Guantanamo Medical FacilityTournament: Warner Robins | Round: 2 | Opponent: Alpharetta MM | Judge: K Yarborough ADVANTAGE ONE IS TROPICAL DISEASE Neglected Tropical Diseases are widespread More than one billion are affected by neglected tropical diseases Diseases bad, lead to extinction NTD's trap over 100 million in structural poverty in Latin America Poverty is the equivalent to a would-be thermonuclear war between the former-USSR and the US every 15 years Tropical Diseases destabilizes communities Communities destabilized by disease leads to war Engaging Guantanamo as a biomedical research institutional solves for tropical disease through vaccine diplomacy Medical diplomacy key to foreign policy of fairness and equity ADVANTAGE TWO IS TERRORISM The legacy of Guantanamo is torture which creates more terrorists A terrorist attack escalates to a global nuclear exchange Terrorist attack in the U.S. whill trigger retaliation that will kill 100 million This will escalate to mass extinction via global nuclear war The name "Guantanamo" is synonymous with torture around the world The dehumanization that torture necessitates breeds a way of thinking about other people that turns us into a brutal, violent people that won't think twice about the humanity of those outside of our moral compass - this makes all forms of violence possible Closing the prison at Guantanamo is not enough- to prevent it as a recruiting tool for terrorism we must economically engage convert it into a positive - research center for tropical disease | 2/26/14 |
1AC - Marijuana ImportationTournament: UGA | Round: 2 | Opponent: Houston County | Judge: Willoughby, L State legalization of marijuana is increasing and has momentum AND The President’s announcement on the marijuana opens the door to state legalization Even as more States legalize it, economic engagement with the #1 product is prohibited because importation of marijuana from Mexico is illegal under Federal law We therefore support the following plan: The United States federal government should authorize States that legalize marijuana to legally import it from Mexico. Contention two is advantages: Advantage One is Drug Cartels. Legalizing marijuana may create legal markets, but as long as the importation of marijuana from Mexico is illegal, the Drug Cartels grow in strength and violence as they bring it across the border. And the drug wars threaten the collapse of civil society and a failed state – makes every conflict with Mexico exponentially worse. Drug cartel instability leads to WMD terrorism on the U.S. That causes extinction Advantage Two is Federalism State autonomy over marijuana is the epicenter of the federal/local division STRONG FEDERALISM IS NECESSARY TO PROTECT AGAINST THE CONCENTRATION OF POWER AND TYRANNY FEDERALISM IS IMPORTANT TO PRESERVE LIBERTY AND TO STOP THE CONCENTRATION OF POWER Advantage Three is the Ganga Revolution Marijuana is the focal point for populist revolt against imperialist foreign policy and sets the foundation for questioning diverse government controlling efforts like nuclear prolif, racial discrimination and censorship. And we will defend that legalization and freedom to trade in marijuana is a rejection of control by big brother. Any step towards the liberalization of drug laws is a good step. Marijuana laws are racist and oppressive. Every step is good, it is the only way progress is ever made. Only dismantling the walls of racism allows us to overcome them Contention Three is Solvency The government of Mexico supports the legal export of marijuana to shift away from ineffective law enforcement that only plays into the hands of violent criminals And, trade with Mexico for legal marijuana will take the profits away from the criminals Eliminating legal barriers between U.S. and Mexico is the only way to stop the war – must take the production chain out of the hands of criminals AND Even limited legal importation will mortally wound the drug cartels | 3/2/14 |
1AC - MedRegsTournament: Barkley Forum | Round: 2 | Opponent: Maine East AL | Judge: J Clark The U.S. federal government inherently restricts medicine and medical supplies to Cuba. Advantage One is Ethics Denial of medical care results in significant unnecessary suffering of innocents. AND specific examples of U.S. devices and drugs denied to the Cuban population, especially children AND, the Effect of U.S. restrictions threaten millions of Cubans AND License restrictions preventing engagement are cruel and inhumane, and unrelated to the goals of U.S. embargo Wilkenson, 2009 Stephen Wilkinson guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 28 October 2009 ETHICAL IMPACT of intentional denial of life-saving medicine outweighs political implications We must act morally Watson, 1977, WORLD HUNGER AND MORAL OBLIGATION, pp. 118-9. Advantage Two is Global Health Leadership Medical regulations restricting medical transfer of hurts the U.S. medicine as well as Cuba Global health leadership is important And global health leadership is key to International medical diplomacy Solvency: U.S.f.g. should lift medical restrictions. Kirby Jones, 2010”. . . regulations makes it impossible to sell . . . . medical products to Cuba this condition in the regulations should be and must be totally eliminated. | 2/26/14 |
